(LYDIA SCOTT - CO/27) Attending a career-related workshop or seminar: 2 points

I have the honor of serving as the Co-President of Spelman Film Fusion for the '26-’27 academic year, and in our plans for events, we were very intentional about planning a plethora of film/photo related workshops for our general body and AUC students! Our first one of the semester was a Headshot Workshop, where members were taught how to take headshots from start to finish, including building lights, setting up the backdrop, using the camera, etc! It was really wonderful not only to get to share my skills with others, but to watch them come away from our event with new knowledge and something (a well-lit headshot) to show for it! Spelman is liberal arts, but as an art major, I find that there’s often too much emphasis on the STEM or Humanities communities at Spelman, and not enough on the arts—so I always value times when I can help to create a space for those interested in filmmaking/photography where they can bond and improve their skills outside of the designated curriculum. These workshops also provide invaluable opportunities for my executive board and me to grow as artists and leaders. By teaching others, we are challenged to put our own skills into practice, strengthen our understanding of our craft, and learn how to communicate our knowledge! After all, knowing how to do something and being able to teach someone else how to do it are two very different skills, and both are quite important in the industry. Through Spelman Film Fusion, I am grateful to help foster a community where creativity is shared, artistic interests are nurtured, and students are empowered to learn from one another.
