Japanese Temple (Traveling to culturally significant locations: 6 points) Janiah Collier, Class of 2028

Over the summer, while studying abroad in Japan, I had the opportunity to explore a beautiful Japanese temple rich in history, culture, and religious significance. Throughout the temple, there were various displays highlighting Shinto traditions, historical events that shaped Japan, and memorials honoring important historical figures. My friends and I also had the opportunity to observe what I believe was a Buddhist prayer ceremony, where monks chanted, struck gongs to replicate religious stories, and blessed personal belongings. Visitors could also write their wishes on wooden sticks, which would later be burned as a spiritual offering.

Additionally, we were able to rent traditional kimonos and explore the surrounding areas. This experience allowed my fellow students and me to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture while developing a deeper appreciation for the religious beliefs, customs, and traditions that continue to shape Japanese society.
