Attending the Georgetown University School of Medicine recruitment trip in Washington, D.C., provided me with an opportunity to explore medical education, engage with professionals in academic medicine, and gain a deeper understanding of the pathway toward becoming a physician-scientist. One of the greatest strengths of this experience was the opportunity to learn about Georgetown’s medical school environment and develop a better understanding of the expectations and opportunities associated with pursuing a medical degree. However, having additional time for individualized conversations with faculty and researchers would have allowed me to explore specific research opportunities and the MD-PhD pathway in greater depth. As a Biology major and McNair Scholar at Spelman College, this experience connected directly to my undergraduate research, clinical involvement, and long-term aspirations of becoming a pediatric surgeon-scientist. Visiting Georgetown reinforced the importance of mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and developing a strong foundation in both scientific research and clinical medicine. It also encouraged me to reflect on how my experiences in undergraduate research and pediatric healthcare have prepared me to pursue advanced medical education. Most importantly, the trip strengthened my motivation to pursue an MD-PhD focused on cancer immunology and pediatric oncology, where I hope to contribute to the development of more effective and less invasive treatments for children with cancer. Moving forward, I plan to maintain connections with medical school faculty, explore additional physician-scientist training opportunities, and continue strengthening my academic and research experiences to become a competitive MD-PhD applicant.
