Completing an internship: 5 points Lola Chiza
This past summer, I returned to Bessemer Trust for my second internship in the Compliance Department. However, this summer I had the opportunity to explore a different area of compliance, focusing on vendor risk management. Unlike my previous internship, where I gained exposure to banking regulations and anti-money laundering practices, this experience introduced me to how financial institutions assess and manage risks associated with third-party vendors. I learned that compliance extends beyond a company's internal operations and also involves ensuring that outside organizations meet appropriate regulatory and ethical standards.
One thing I found particularly interesting was understanding how much responsibility companies have when working with third-party vendors. Before this internship, I hadn't given much thought to the risks that could arise from these relationships. This experience helped me recognize the importance of evaluating potential risks, maintaining accountability, and protecting both the company and its clients. Returning for a second summer also allowed me to build on the knowledge I gained during my first internship while becoming more confident in a professional environment.
Overall, this internship helped me develop a broader understanding of compliance and its connection to the legal field. As someone interested in pursuing a career in law, I appreciated the opportunity to explore another area where regulations, risk management, and ethical decision-making intersect. It also reminded me of the importance of remaining open to different career paths and experiences, especially as I continue figuring out which areas of law interest me most.
