CNA Job Mentor Relationship (Developing a professional mentor relationship: 5 points) Janiah Collier

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at a Women's Comprehensive Care Clinic, where I gained valuable hands-on experience in patient care and clinical procedures. Throughout my time there, I developed skills in administering EKGs, conducting spirometry tests, assisting with vaccinations, taking vital signs, and navigating electronic health records. Beyond these technical skills, I had the privilege of connecting with several Spelman alumnae, including one of the clinic's physicians. I also built meaningful relationships with the clinic's nurse and the medical assistant who served as my trainer, both of whom provided invaluable mentorship throughout my experience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this opportunity was expanding my understanding of patient navigation and the importance of culturally competent healthcare. Because the clinic primarily serves Black women, I gained a deeper appreciation for the unique healthcare experiences, challenges, and disparities affecting this population. This experience not only strengthened my clinical abilities but also reinforced my passion for advocating for Black women's health and pursuing a career dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes for underserved communities.
