Traveling to culturally significant locations: 6 points

Traveling to Cancún, Mexico over spring break provided me with the opportunity to engage with a culturally significant location beyond a typical vacation experience. While Cancún is often viewed through the lens of tourism, I became more aware of the deeper cultural and historical context of Mexico, particularly the influence of indigenous civilizations such as the Maya. Observing local architecture, cuisine, language, and customs allowed me to reflect on how culture is preserved and adapted in spaces that are heavily influenced by global tourism.

One strength of this experience was the exposure to a culture different from my own, which challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and be more intentional about understanding my surroundings. However, a limitation of traveling in a resort-centered environment is that it can sometimes restrict full cultural immersion. This realization encouraged me to think more critically about how I travel and the importance of seeking out more authentic, community-based experiences in the future.

This experience connects to my broader academic and personal interests in cultural awareness and global engagement. As an aspiring lawyer, it is important for me to understand diverse perspectives and cultural contexts, especially when working with people from different backgrounds. Moving forward, I plan to be more intentional about engaging with local communities, learning basic language skills, and exploring historical sites when I travel, so that I can gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the places I visit.
