Supporting the Arts: “Single Black Female”
Visual Arts – 2 Points
One of the most exciting visual arts experiences I attended this semester was the play Single Black Female. The performance itself was entertaining and engaging, but what made it especially meaningful was seeing one of my Spelman sisters, Morgan Hubbard, perform on stage.
Watching someone you know bring a character to life adds an entirely different level of appreciation to a performance. It takes courage, dedication, and creativity to perform in front of an audience, and it was inspiring to see Morgan confidently take on that role. The energy in the room reflected how supportive the Spelman community is when it comes to uplifting each other’s talents.
The play itself was dynamic and captivating, blending humor, storytelling, and powerful moments that kept the audience engaged. It was real and authentic, and it wasn’t sugarcoated with biased perspectives. Theater has a unique way of communicating emotions and perspectives in a way that feels immediate and personal. Seeing the actors move through different scenes and bring the story to life made the experience memorable.
Attending the performance also reminded me how important the arts are within the AUC community. While many of us focus heavily on academics, athletics, or career goals, creative spaces like theater allow students to express themselves in different ways. Supporting events like this helps strengthen the culture of creativity and collaboration on campus.
Overall, it was a great experience, not just because of the performance itself, but because it was an opportunity to support a fellow Spelman student and celebrate the talent that exists within our community.
