Securing the Future – Lessons from the “Secure the Bag” Workshop-Haderah Phillips (Career counseling or advising session: 2 points)

I attended a personal development Zoom workshop called “Secure the Bag” led by Morehouse alum Amir Duke. The purpose of the workshop was to help students better prepare for the workforce by focusing on important professional skills such as resume building, networking, and interview preparation. The session was very informative and provided practical advice that I can apply as I continue preparing for internships and future career opportunities. One of the main topics Amir Duke discussed was how to tailor your resume. He explained that resumes should not be generic but instead should be customized for each job or opportunity. By aligning your experiences and skills with the specific role you are applying for, so employers are able to clearly see why you would be a strong candidate. This reminded me of the importance of highlighting the most relevant experiences rather than listing everything I have done. The workshop also provided helpful tips about interview preparation. Amir Duke talked about the importance of researching the company beforehand, practicing responses to common interview questions, and presenting yourself professionally. He stressed that preparation helps build confidence and allows you to communicate your qualifications better during an interview. Lastly, he discussed the importance of post-interview follow-up. Sending a thank-you email after an interview shows professionalism and appreciation for the opportunity. It also helps reinforce your interest in the position and can leave a positive impression on employers. Overall, the “Secure the Bag” workshop was a valuable experience that gave me useful strategies for professional development. I learned practical ways to improve my resume, strengthen my networking skills, and prepare more effectively for interviews. The advice shared by Amir Duke will be helpful as I continue developing my career and preparing to enter the workforce.
