Participating in a performing arts group or ensemble (per year): 6 points
This year, I’ve continued my involvement in Ashietu African Dance and Drum Ministry for Sisters Chapel, which I’ve been a member of since the fall semester of my freshman year. In addition to performing every month during chapel services this semester, we’ve performed at several Black History Month educational/cultural celebration events and at church services outside campus, increasing our presence as a Spelman ministry and strengthening bonds with organizations beyond the gates. I also helped facilitate an African dance workshop in partnership with the Miss Spelman Advisory Board this March, and taught a workshop for my sorority chapter (Beta Iota Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.), sharing the joy (and exercise value) of African dance with other members of the Spelman community. Participating in Ashietu has helped me build my confidence with performing, as well as improving my stage presence beyond technique– I’ve danced all my life, but have always had a somewhat hard time with performance anxiety. Serving as co-lead has also helped me develop my leadership qualities. For example, in preparation for a show we’re participating in next week, I’ve passed on communication between members and our teacher, Sister Omelika Kuumba, helped with logistics (getting dancers their costumes, ensuring everyone has transportation to practice, etc.) and worked with members who need extra practice with the choreography outside of scheduled rehearsal times. While I am unfortunately graduating this May, I plan to continue dancing in whatever capacity possible post-grad and know that the athleticism, relationships, and interpersonal skills I’ve developed through Ashietu will serve me well in the future.
