Natalia Del Pino - Attending Professional Networking Events (+2 Points)

I attended the HBCU Danceline and Drumline Convention as a representative of Spelman College, engaging with performers, coaches, and students from institutions across the country. This event brought together individuals deeply rooted in the traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, highlighting the cultural significance, athleticism, and artistry of both danceline and drumline performance. The primary focus of the convention was to celebrate HBCU performance culture, provide technical training, and foster community among students who contribute to these dynamic traditions.

I found this experience to be both energizing and affirming. Representing Spelman in a space that centered Black excellence in performance reminded me of the pride and responsibility that comes with being part of an HBCU community. The intensity and precision of the routines, combined with the powerful musicality of the drumlines, created an environment that was both highly disciplined and deeply expressive. While stepping into a space with such a high level of talent could feel intimidating, I also felt inspired and motivated to continue growing as a performer and representative of my institution.

This experience connected to broader themes of cultural expression, identity, and community within the African American experience. HBCU danceline and drumline traditions are rooted in legacy, resilience, and creativity, serving as both artistic outlets and forms of cultural storytelling. Observing and participating in this environment reinforced concepts related to cultural pride and collective identity, as well as the importance of preserving and uplifting traditions that have historically been underrepresented or undervalued in mainstream spaces.

Engaging with participants from other HBCUs allowed me to build connections and gain insight into how different institutions approach performance, leadership, and team dynamics. I appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn new techniques, and witness the diversity within a shared cultural framework. These interactions expanded my understanding of HBCU culture beyond my own campus and emphasized the strength of intercollegiate community and collaboration.

Participating in this convention contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth. I strengthened my confidence in representing Spelman in a large, high-energy environment, while also developing a greater appreciation for the discipline and teamwork required in performance-based organizations. I learned the importance of adaptability, presence, and intentionality in both practice and performance settings.

The skills and insights I gained from attending the HBCU Danceline and Drumline Convention are directly applicable to my continued involvement in performance and leadership. This experience reinforced my commitment to excellence, cultural awareness, and community engagement. It also affirmed my identity as a representative of an institution that values tradition, artistry, and the ongoing celebration of Black culture.
