Learning the Game Behind the Game: Shadowing in Sports Medicine

Career Development – 6 Points

One of the most meaningful professional experiences I have had this semester was shadowing Dr. Walters in the sports medicine department at Clark Atlanta University. As someone who hopes to pursue a career in orthopedics and eventually become a team physician, this opportunity gave me a valuable glimpse of what it truly means to care for athletes at the collegiate level. More than just observing medical work, it allowed me to see how sports medicine professionals build relationships with athletes, collaborate with other staff members, and support players both physically and mentally.

During my time shadowing, I observed how injuries are evaluated and how recovery plans are developed. I learned that sports medicine involves far more than treating injuries after they occur; it also focuses heavily on prevention, rehabilitation, and long-term athlete health. Watching Dr. Walters interact with athletes showed me how important communication and trust are in this field. Athletes rely on sports medicine professionals not only for treatment but also for guidance on when they are truly ready to return to play.

What stood out to me the most was the collaborative nature of the environment. Athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and physicians all work together to ensure that athletes can perform at their highest level while remaining healthy. Seeing this teamwork reinforced how interconnected sports medicine is with other areas of athletic performance. Every professional involved plays a role in helping athletes succeed, and that level of collaboration is something I find incredibly inspiring.

This experience also felt personal because it connected back to my own journey. In high school, I served as a student athletic trainer while also competing as an athlete, which gave me an early appreciation for both sides of sports medicine. Being in that position helped me understand how much effort goes into keeping athletes healthy behind the scenes. Shadowing Dr. Walters helped me see how that same passion and interest can evolve into a long-term career.

Beyond the clinical exposure, the mentorship aspect of this experience has been incredibly valuable. Having the chance to learn directly from someone who has built a career in sports medicine has given me a clearer understanding of the path ahead. Dr. Walters has offered advice about pursuing medicine, balancing academics with professional goals, and developing the discipline necessary to succeed in such a demanding field.

Overall, this experience has strengthened my motivation to pursue a career in orthopedics and sports medicine. It reminded me that the work done behind the scenes plays a critical role in an athlete’s success. Watching how injuries are managed, how recovery is supported, and how trust is built between athletes and medical professionals helped me see the true impact of this profession. Experiences like this not only expand my knowledge but also reinforce my commitment to the career path I hope to follow.
