GWPI Spelman Cohort Interest Meeting, Attending a General Interest Meeting: 3pts

I attended a general interest meeting for the Georgia Women’s Policy Institute, the Spelman Cohort. Throughout high school, I was a writer for “UpNext,” a student-founded, nonpartisan blog focused on local and national politics. Three other writers and I posted weekly blogs and, sometimes, podcasts featuring Virginia representatives to encourage civic engagement in our respective high schools. I often wrote about social issues, such as the ongoing gentrification of D.C., or Black women athletes facing harsher comments than other athletes. Coming into Spelman, I knew I wanted to get involved in social justice, and in addition to my previous engagement with the Social Justice Program, I wanted to learn more about the GWPI Spelman Cohort.

During the meeting, a representative from GWPI introduced us to the program, explaining what being a fellow entails and the application process. Learning about the legislative process and advocating for legislation is the central focus of this program. As a fellow in the program, you get the opportunity to develop your own policy project and engage with representatives at the Georgia State Capitol. The event also featured a panel of former and current fellows, who discussed their experiences in their cohort and shared application advice. I'm still deciding whether I want to apply for this upcoming cohort. However, I definitely want to apply sometime during undergrad.
