Behind the Scenes of Elite Athletics: Touring Overtime Elite

Career Development – 2 Points

Through the Spelman Sports and Entertainment Collective (SSEC), I had the opportunity to tour Overtime Elite (OTE) and see how a professional sports organization operates behind the scenes. The experience was both inspiring and eye-opening, especially for someone interested in sports medicine and athletic performance.

OTE is known for developing elite basketball talent, but what impressed me the most was the level of support that surrounds the athletes. During the tour, we got to see their physical therapy areas, strength and conditioning spaces, and training facilities. It was clear that every part of the organization was designed to help athletes reach their full potential while maintaining their health and performance.

Seeing the sports medicine and training spaces particularly stood out to me. The equipment, recovery tools, and training environment demonstrated how much emphasis professional organizations place on injury prevention, recovery, and performance optimization. It helped me better understand how sports medicine professionals work alongside strength coaches and trainers to create a system that keeps athletes competing at a high level.

Another aspect of the visit that I appreciated was the opportunity to engage in thoughtful conversation with professionals working within the organization. Hearing them talk about their roles, responsibilities, and experiences made the environment feel more real and accessible. It reminded me that careers in sports medicine and athletics involve many different pathways and skill sets.

Overall, the OTE tour was motivating. It showed me how the work done behind the scenes, from physical therapy to conditioning, plays a major role in an athlete’s success. Experiences like this help bridge the gap between what we learn in the classroom and how those concepts apply in real professional settings.
