Averi Rodriguez (Class of 2028): Attending Professional Networking Events - FBLS Health Careers Bootcamp (3 points)
As Co-Correspondence Director, I had the chance to interact with and develop relationships with each of the event's panelists, which really helped me hone my leadership, communication, and teamwork abilities. I also had the privilege of introducing the panelists, discussing their accomplishments and perspectives, and setting the tone for what turned out to be an inspiring and interesting conversation. That was particularly significant to me because it allowed me to actively participate in the experience in a visible manner in addition to working behind the scenes to make the event a reality.
In addition, this experience made me consider how such events might develop in the future. Even though the event's impact and purpose were strong, there is always space for improvement. Future iterations of the Health Careers Bootcamp, for instance, might incorporate more interactive elements like workshops catered to particular healthcare pathways, smaller networking circles, or breakout sessions. Additionally, since many students have interests at the nexus of healthcare, science, leadership, and business, I believe the event could have reached an even larger audience with increased promotion across more organizations and departments.
Even with those potential enhancements, I found this event particularly noteworthy because FBLS does not typically host many programs focused on health professions. Being a biology major made it particularly significant and meaningful for me to contribute to the creation of something that both expanded the organization's influence and represented my own interests. Seeing health professionals represented in a business-oriented setting was powerful because it served as a reminder that business and healthcare are closely related fields that are connected by leadership, innovation, service, and communication. Additionally, there was a strong connection between this activity and other leadership, service, and professional development experiences I have had.
In many of my roles, I've discovered that creating opportunities that uplift and empower others brings me the most fulfillment. By adding more health-focused programming to FBLS, this bootcamp fulfilled an unmet need, which is a pattern I've noticed in some of the most impactful events. Additionally, it reaffirmed what I have been learning from extracurricular activities and academics: interdisciplinary spaces are extremely valuable because they show how students' interests and career paths frequently overlap in meaningful ways.
My objectives were impacted by the experience because it made me realize how important it is to create environments where students feel empowered, represented, and connected to new opportunities. It increased my desire to keep looking for leadership positions that will enable me to design initiatives, form alliances, and promote more inclusive and expansive career exploration. I want to build on this experience going forward by looking for more chances to organize memorable events, hone my outreach and public speaking abilities, and contribute to the expansion of the programming that groups like FBLS can provide. Above all, this experience made me realize that I want to contribute to the creation of meaningful opportunities rather than merely participate in them.
