Participating in Spelman Day at the Capitol allowed me to observe the legislative process in action and connect classroom learning to real-world governance. During the visit, Spelman students observed sessions of the Georgia Senate and House from the gallery. We also heard directly from Spelman alumnae who are actively shaping public policy. This experience offered insight into how laws are debated, passed, and implemented. It emphasized the importance of civic engagement beyond voting. Witnessing policy discussions firsthand deepened my understanding of institutional power.

The experience felt especially meaningful given my background in advocacy. Seeing legislators at work reinforced how early civic engagement can shape long-term commitments to public service. It strengthened my habit of reflective thinking by allowing me to connect past experiences with present learning. The visit affirmed that policy work is both personal and systemic. It reminded me that change requires persistence, strategy, and informed participation. This experience reinforced my desire to engage with policy as a tool for equity.
