Nia Gooden - Creating Bookmarks for the L.O.V.E letters project ( 3 points)

This Tuesday I decided to participate in the Bridging the Gap event where the L.O.V.E Letters Project, Spelman HPSA, Morehouse NAACP, and more organizations were collecting books and creating handmade bookmarks to distribute to young readers! When I heard the event was happening I knew immediately that I wanted to participate. My task was simple: take a slip of paper and write a positive, educational message on the bookmark. I decided to make four different bookmarks with various messages. I felt inspired by the intention of the event. Reflecting on my experience creating these bookmarks I considered the fact that so many Black children will not have access to literature about their culture due to book bans. This unfortunate reality-one that the event was working to mitigate-reminded me of a reading I completed in ADW where the author mentioned quite a few traditionally successful Black historical figures, but also intentionally acknowledged Black people who had intellect but due to racial injustice were never able to experience formal education. As someone who loves to read it was very nice to help create a little gift to encourage the lifelong habit of reading.
