Developing A Professional Mentor Relationship (5 Points) Janiah Collier

Throughout my time here at Spelman, I have been presented with many opportunities to connect and build my network with people who are within my field of interest. During a biology sophomore seminar, we were exposed to a panel of people who are in different fields of health and one of them happened to be a nurse. Though she is not a midwife like I aspire to be, Mrs. Holtzclaw is a nurse, and I still believed it was important to connect with her.

We exchanged numbers and since then she has been a consistent mentor for me throughout my journey towards nursing, especially with Spelman lacking that as a choice of major. She is not the only person I have connected with through Spelman though. I have also had the immense pleasure to be guided by Ms. Abdul-Hameed, a health coordinator who holds maternal and infant health for women of color especially to the utmost of importance. She has pushed me towards greatness even when I doubt my own ability and she continues to shine her light within my life. I am so happy to have connected with her and even be working on some impressive career changing projects currently that will develop me in more ways than I could be thankful for. As someone who is religious, I am thankful that God placed these people in my life to remind me that I am capable of being successful in everything He has and will be blessing me with.
