Developing Internship Applications and Essays: Rutgers RISE (4 points)

I completed an application for the Rutgers RISE program, a summer research program based in New Jersey or supporting universities.  In my essay, I described why research matters academically and socially. I centered my essay on my commitment to Black psychology and culturally responsive research. The process challenged me to move beyond saying I’m “interested in research” and demonstrate how my lived experiences, leadership at Spelman, and commitment to marginalized communities shape the questions I have about the field of psychology. It expanded my thinking by forcing me to see research as both an intellectual advancement and a form of liberation by bringing the disparities within current research to light.

This activity contributed deeply to my academic development. I learned that I am most confident when I write from my lived experiences and apply those to how I want to impact my community. I framed research as a tool for equity and ensured my essay's tone was confident and intentional. I also realized that I am not just preparing for opportunities that will advance my career, but also preparing to contribute something meaningful to the field that could impact various communities.

In the real world, this reflection helps me approach future applications, graduate school statements, and professional interviews with clarity. I choose to focus on impact, alignment, and vision instead of just listing accomplishments. This shift will guide how I pursue research spaces that value both rigor, impact, and community.
