Ariana Frinks, Attending professional networking events: 3 points

I attended the FBLS x Blueprint Journalism Media Makers Panel, a professional networking event featuring Jessica Cruel and Danielle Cadet. The panel focused on navigating careers in journalism and media, building authentic brands, and creating space for diverse voices in an industry that is constantly evolving. Both speakers shared their professional journeys, highlighting the challenges they faced as Black women in media and the strategies they used to move into leadership roles. The event was not only a conversation about career growth but also about ownership, innovation, and community-building in journalism.

Personally, I found the event both inspiring and affirming. Hearing Jessica Cruel speak about redefining beauty standards in mainstream media and Danielle Cadet discuss creating platforms that center underrepresented voices reminded me why I am drawn to journalism and media in the first place. I felt motivated listening to their honesty about setbacks, pivots, and the importance of networking intentionally. One thing that stood out to me was their emphasis on relationship-building rather than transactional networking. It challenged me to rethink how I approach professional spaces, not just as opportunities to gain something, but as spaces to build genuine connections and long-term collaborations. I also appreciated their transparency about burnout and the pressure to constantly produce in digital media, which made their success feel realistic rather than unattainable.

Their advice on developing a distinct voice and staying adaptable in digital spaces aligns directly with concepts I’ve learned in branding and media strategy. Additionally, the panel reinforced lessons about civic engagement and representation in media, which aligns with my academic interests in using communication as a tool for impact. Overall, attending this panel helped bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice, showing me how the skills I am developing now can translate into meaningful, sustainable work in journalism and media.
