Winning Local Scholarship (4pts): NoVA Alumnae Association of Spelman College Scholarship- Kristian Caldwell

I attended the DMV Spelman x Morehouse send-off, an event designed to celebrate incoming students while also providing resources and guidance as we begin our journeys at our institutions. The event brought together future, Spelman and Morehouse students, alumni, and community members. During the sendoff, I was informed about a scholarship opportunity and was encouraged to apply. So, when I got home from the event, I did just that.

In my scholarship essay, I focused on explaining why I believe I was deserving of opportunity and how it aligned with both my experiences and my future goals. I shared that I was an academic scholar through high school consistently challenging myself while maintaining a strong academic performance. Alongside of my academics, I completed over 200 hours of volunteer work, participating in several clubs and organizations, and played sports. Balancing these commitments taught me discipline, time management, and accountability, but more importantly it showed me the value of being present and engaged in my community. These experiences shaped me into someone who does not shy away from responsibility and who understands the success is most meaningful when it shared.

A major part of my essay highlighted my commitment to giving back. Service has always been important to me, not because it looks good on paper, but because I genuinely enjoy helping others and making new connections. Whether through volunteering, collaborating, student organizations, or supporting those around me, I have always been intentional about uplifting my community. However, I acknowledged the financial uncertainty that my family was currently facing, particularly with my mother working as a federal employee during the time which potential federal worker cuts created instability. Receiving a scholarship would allow me to continue my education with less financial strain while staying focused on my academics and service-oriented goals.

My essay also connected strongly to what I think it means to be a Spelmanite. As a Spelman student I’m expected to lead with purpose, serve with intention, and use my education to create positive change. I emphasized that I am always willing to give back, seek growth, and build meaningful relationships, qualities that align with Spelman’s “A Choice to Change the World.
