Sloan Mitchell - Creating Original Artwork (5 points)

Silent Reflections - Original Artwork by Sloan Mitchell

This piece is inspired by Michal Bisola’s artwork “Alone Not Lonely,” created in 2024, and elements of my final artwork were pulled from artists such as Hughie Lee Smith, Ren Hang, and John Everett Millais.  The drawing consists of a Black woman in her room.  She lies on her bed, facing the wall, with only her afro and upper back visible.  I actually created two versions (the second pictured below), one in shades of blue and the other in various colors. These pieces allowed me to fully experiment with watercolors and express the feeling of isolation within a room.

I wanted to explore the comfort of feeling trapped in your room as a form of comfort. The kind of day where staying in bed feels right, and letting your phone ring with plans you don’t want to make. I also want to capture how isolating it can be to stay in your room, allowing the day to pass by without a second thought.

I love this piece because it conveys the subject’s emotions subtly yet powerfully. Her pain isn’t overtly visible, but it is present in the small details—the bare walls, the blank stare at the wall, and the goldfish on her nightstand turned away from her.

After creating this piece, I reflected on the overall message I wanted to convey. Feelings of loneliness and isolation were once deeply rooted within me, but they also gave me the space to recognize how much I have healed from them. I was nervous to share this work because my art comes from a raw and vulnerable place. I felt exposed, knowing that people would see a part of me—even if they didn’t fully understand what they were looking at.

However, I want to continue creating art that makes me feel uncomfortable and helps me recognize my truth.
