Sloan Mitchell - Attending a Performance: iHeartRadio Jingle Ball (2-3 Points)
Atlanta Culture at iHeartRadio Jingle Ball
Over the break, I had the opportunity to attend this year’s iHeartRadio Jingle Ball with a few of my Spelman sisters. I had never been before, but I promised myself that I would continue saying yes to fun, spontaneous opportunities. We were able to see artists such as Kehlani, Mariah the Scientist, and many others. Although Kehlani was the main reason I got out of bed to attend, it was fascinating to watch some of the more established artists effortlessly move the crowd.
Atlanta has always been deeply rooted in music, particularly within the R&B scene, and the energy of the night reflected that legacy. There were Black people of all ages in the crowd, watching artists who have refined our Atlanta culture over the years.
For instance, Nelly was one of the performers. He has released hit songs such as Hot In Herre, Dilemma, Air Force Ones, and several others. I had always known his music was an Atlanta staple, but I had never had the chance to see him perform live. He got everyone out of their seats, dancing along to his greatest hits, songs I knew even my Atlanta native dad would be eager to hear.
It was a beautiful sight to witness both old and new Atlanta culture coming together in one room, united through music. The night reminded me why Atlanta holds such a powerful place in the music industry - not just a starting point for artists, but a city that celebrates its past while also creating a space for new voices to emerge.
