“Blues For An Alabama Sky” by Pearl Cleage is now the first production that I have performed in at Spelman College. I am so grateful for the entire experience and for the new family that was built within the cast and crew from this show. Being a first year, I was nervous to audition because I was not familiar with the department or the processes that Spelman Theatre had. Thankfully, after speaking with family, mentors, and praying I decided to be courageous and audition anyway. Once again, I was not familiar with Spelman Theatre’s department, students, or faculty but I was eager to become familiar and knew that this was an amazing opportunity that I was ready to embark upon. I am proud to say that I was the only first year casted in the production, and had an amazing time learning from upperclassmen, the department, and our director Professor Keith Arthur Bolden. The show had a cast of 5 artists and told an incredible and necessary story. The audience was able to relate to the characters and the story as it depicted different perspectives of black struggle. I am so proud of this show and the message that we were able to communicate to the audience. My Honors English Professor, Dr. Hite, was so moved by the story that the next day in class she created a lecture based on the content of the show for the class to discuss. It aligned perfectly with what we were discussing in class surrounding “Loving Blackness”. This production created so many opportunities for the entire cast and crew and communicated a message that everyone could relate to in some way and I am grateful to have been a part of it.
