Placing in an Academic Competition (6pts)
On November 1st, a team of honors students competed in the Southeast Regional Ethics Bowl competition. After months of thoughtful dialogue and preparation, we placed third in the competition and advanced to the Nationals, taking place in March of 2026. As the only HBCU on the circuit, it was surprising and affirming to realize that our training in the Black liberal arts tradition had thoroughly prepared us to excel in a competition centered on ethical practice, teamwork, and camaraderie.
This year, in preparing for the national competition, we have taken a more intentional approach to developing ethical frameworks to guide our work on the seventeen cases we have been given. From texts like Beloved, we have been charged with developing a Morrisonian ethic, separate from traditional ethical stances such as deontology, utilitarianism, etc. In using Morrison’s work as guidance, we remain authentic to our experiences and center our own perspectives as students from a Black women’s institution - Jayda Hendrickson
