Nyabinghi Irving- Blues for an Alabama Sky: Attending performances (theater, musical, concerts, opera, dance): 2 points

I was required to attend the plays for the semester as well as write a critique for both. I overall enjoyed Blues fr an alabama sky a lot. I really liked how they had the doors on the side opening as the actors came on and off the stage.  It maintained the illusion that they were just walking on a street, since they didn’t have to take the time to open the door themselves.  I noticed a few minor details like that that really enhanced the immersion of the play.  For example, I noticed that whenever they were in Guy’s apartment, Delia would be sitting in her apartment, writing. I really liked this detail because, in reality, she would be in her apartment doing whatever, while they were focused on whatever they were talking about.  It really helped me perceive her as a real person, doing things that she enjoyed, even while her friends were the focus in the next room.  I do, however, think that she could have been more active.  She was just sitting at her desk silently the entire time.  I get they might not have wanted to bring too much attention to her, but she could’ve gotten up to get something to drink, use the bathroom, anything subtle like that. Overall, I really enjoyed this play and its deeper meanings.  I like how it shows Angel getting back into the same cycle at the end of the play, illustrating how difficult it is for some people to escape the situations they get stuck in.  Even when something terrible happens, they cannot break free.  I would definitely recommend that a friend watch it, and the cast and crew did an excellent job of bringing the story to life.
