Nia Gooden - Researching and Identifiying Potential Scholarship (2-3 points)

Over winter break I tasked myself with searching for scholarships that I could complete during the upcoming spring semester. With dedicated time and work I was able to not only identify some applicable scholarships to apply to but also some search engines specifically dedicated to alerting members about new scholarships. At first the challenge was figuring out the right words to input in google to find scholarships that I met the criteria for. I tried searches such as “scholarships undergraduate psychology majors”, “scholarships for French language undergraduates”, and “scholarships for undergraduate Black women”. It took some adjusting of the words but eventually I found a few scholarships that I qualified for. I found the “Hope for Healing” scholarship that is for students interested in working in the fields of addiction and mental health, the Arnetha V. Bishop memorial scholarship that is geared toward assisting marginalized students (BIPOC & LBGTQIA+) who are pursuing careers in mental health, and the Learn.org scholarship, a more general scholarship that asks applicants to explain the importance of higher education to them, and how that education will support their future career goals. Finally, I identified the Future Counselors of America Scholarship which appealed to me since I am very interested in counseling as a future career. This activity allowed me to practice the crucial skill of searching for scholarships, one that I will apply throughout my time as an undergraduate student and in my pursuit of graduate education as well.

Through this research I was exposed to scholarship search engines and resources: Unigo, Scholarships 360, Online Psychology Degrees, and Bold.org scholarships. I look forward to returning to these websites in the future to find updated information about new scholarships.
