A Choice to Change the World through the NAASC DC Chapter

I am honored to share that I have received a scholarship from the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College in the Washington, D.C. area. The application encouraged us to reflect upon how we would use our attendance and graduation from Spelman to become significant change agents. While the prompt seemed quite daunting, I began searching for the actual reason why I chose to attend Spelman. I created a video that showcased my passion for public speaking, which started at the age of 11, and how it has shaped my outlook on social justice. While many current issues can make young people feel helpless, we are never too young to speak up for those who cannot. I knew at 13 that I was not “too young” to speak for Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and the many other victims of police brutality. A few years later, I began writing my own speeches, which called upon my peers to express that they, too, should speak for those who cannot, as those who are not fighting against oppression are, in effect, advocating for it. As I stated in my video, Spelman has driven me to embrace my fellow sisters and uplift the black community that surrounds me. Since then, I have joined community service organizations, advocated for social justice and political issues, and continued writing my book, titled Race & Righteousness: The Autobiography of a Young Black Woman in Collected Verse. As expressed in my scholarship application video, I intend to spend the rest of my matriculation at Spelman, focusing on being an impactful change agent and upholding the tagline by making a choice to change the world.
