LEGACY CAPTURED HOMECOMING PHOTO PROJECT: CREATING ORIGINAL ART (SILVER 6 POINTS) - CLASS OF 2028
Creating original art (Silver 6 points)
This semester marked the first half of my reign as Miss Granddaughters Club at Spelman. As part of my platform, “Legacy C.A.P.tured: Preserving Spelman’s History Through Media,” I want to fill the gap in Spelman’s archives--which stops in 2009-- by creating and empowering others to create media that captures our history in the present. My first initiative for my platform was to start a photography project capturing the legacies of SpelHouse students and alumni at Homecoming 2025. I took portraits in a street-photography style, taking videos of each subject introducing themselves and their graduation year for archival purposes. By the end of the photography portion of my project, I had selected and edited a collection of 19 photos. I also edited and posted two videos of subjects introducing themselves and their final portrait on Instagram in collaboration with the Atlanta Chapter of the National Alumni Association of Spelman College. Right now, I’m in the process of completing documentation to officially donate my photos to the Spelman College Archives, and I plan to post even more photos and videos of the project to share with the larger SpelHouse community.
In an era where Black history is constantly being erased or rewritten, it is more important now than ever to preserve our own history. This project increased my appreciation for the history and legacy of SpelHouse by allowing me to meet and make art of students and alumni from all walks of life coming to celebrate a common experience. I also appreciated Black beauty throughout the editing process as I added my creative touches. As I continue my reign as Miss GDC, I hope to capture more photos capturing AUC history in the present and even get more photographers involved in my platform.
