Leadership role in an academic organization (3 pts) - (Endia Evans, Class of 2028)
This academic year, I am serving as Mentorship Chair for Spelman Sisters of STEM, an academic organization dedicated to creating a safe space for all STEM majors at Spelman. Building an intellectual community involves diverse perspectives and ideas, which I wanted to contribute to Spelman Sisters of STEM as mentorship chair. Given this was a new role, I led the development and implementation of the SisterLink mentorship program, designed to foster meaningful connections between upperclass women and underclass women. This cultivated a supportive and empowering space where students can grow academically, professionally, and personally within the STEM fields. My favorite part of being in this role thus far is creating events to support the bonding of mentor-mentee pairings. Around Halloween, I hosted SisterLink’s first event, entitled “Dreams, Designs, and DNA, a Spooktackular SisterLink Kickoff”. This event was a fun, casual gathering to kick off the mentorship program, featuring food, music, and activities that allowed all mentors and mentees to get to know one another. To support each other’s STEM aspirations, every pairing was tasked with creating a shared vision board, allowing each other to align their future goals visually and make plans towards their aspirations. Overall, I truly enjoy my role as mentorship chair, and I aim to host more bonding events in the coming semester to ensure mentorship pairings are working effectively and smoothly.
