Christina Simone Coker (Class Of 2029) — Job Shadowing (3-5 Points)
Shadowing the Medicine–Pediatrics (MED-PEDS) residency program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital was a uniquely rigorous and insightful experience. One of the primary strengths of this opportunity was exposure to a dual-trained specialty within one of the hospital’s most competitive residency programs. Observing MED-PEDS physicians demonstrated a remarkable breadth of knowledge, as they seamlessly transitioned between adult and pediatric patient populations while maintaining continuity of care. The program’s academic intensity and clinical excellence were evident in daily rounds, case discussions, and the precision with which patient care decisions were made.
The fast-paced nature of such an elite program also limited opportunities for extended discussion. As a shadowing student, I was often absorbing complex information without the chance to fully unpack it in real time. This experience could have been improved through scheduled teaching moments or guiding questions before the appointments to contextualize observations and allow for deeper engagement with the physicians’ thought processes.
This experience strongly connected with my academic background as a Health Science major, as well as my prior hands-on exposure to healthcare environments. MED-PEDS uniquely bridged concepts I have studied separately such as developmental physiology, chronic disease management, and social factors—by demonstrating how care evolves across the lifespan. A consistent pattern emerged across my experiences in medicine: the most effective providers are those who integrate scientific knowledge with adaptability and patient-centered communication.
Shadowing MED-PEDS aligned with my long-standing interest in pediatrics and intensive care, while expanding my understanding of longitudinal care. This reinforced themes I have encountered in both coursework and volunteer roles: health outcomes are deeply influenced by consistency, trust, and advocacy over time. This shadowing experience significantly influenced my professional goals by clarifying the type of physician I aspire to become; one who is both scientifically versatile and deeply attuned to patient needs across different stages of life. Observing physicians who had earned positions in one of the most selective residency programs affirmed my motivation to pursue excellence while remaining grounded in empathy and service.
Moving forward, I plan to build on this experience by pursuing further shadowing in pediatric settings, seeking research opportunities connected to child health and chronic disease, and continuing hands-on clinical involvement. I’m excited to say I look forward to shadowing on breaks more often now! Academically, I intend to strengthen my foundation in the health sciences while exploring interdisciplinary pathways that mirror the MED-PEDS model of comprehensive care.
Authentically,
Christina Simone Coker
