Chandler Warden - Academic Conference: Increasing Diversity in Dentsitry Summit (2-3 points), Class of 2027
On November 13 and 14, I experienced one of the most transformative moments in my pre-dental journey through the Increasing Diversity in Dentistry (IDID) Summit, a program that challenged me to think more boldly about my future and the impact I hope to make in oral health.
Day 1 at The Gathering Spot set a powerful foundation. The summit opened with thoughtful introductions, followed by an inspiring presentation of $50,000 in grants awarded to support upcoming dental practices—highlighting IDID’s dedication to fostering community-driven care. The roundtable sessions that followed were one of the most valuable components of the day. Speaking directly with admissions representatives in small groups allowed me to gain honest insight into school culture, applicant expectations, and the qualities programs truly value.
Day 2 at Spelman College focused deeply on preparation and strategy. The most eye-opening moment was an application exercise led by Dr. Cynthia E. Hodge, whose transparency and expertise helped demystify the admissions process and offered practical, personalized guidance. One-on-one conversations with admissions reps further helped me understand how to present my story with clarity and purpose.
I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Zerita C. Buchanan, DDS, MPH, Dr. Jeanette Sabir-Holloway, Dr. Cynthia Hodge, DMD, MPH, MPA, Dr. Jason Cummins, DMD, and Dr. Lemoine Dillon for their leadership, mentorship, and dedication to creating accessible pathways for future dental professionals.
Thank you!
