Attending Theater Performance (2pts): How We Got On Play- Kristian Caldwell
Watching How We got On made me think about the role of art and creativity and shaping personal and cultural identity. I noticed the play connected closely to what we had learned in my African Diaspora class because it showed how black creativity has always been a way to express identity, overcome challenges, and build community. In class, we often discussed how African-American music and culture come from a long history of resistance and finding strength through expression. Hip-hop is one of the most powerful examples of that, and the play highlights it in a way that feels both personal in historical. The characters use rap, not only as entertainment, but as a tool to cope with family pressure, social expectations, and their own insecurities, which made their experiences feel real and relatable.
The play also explores themes of belonging representation in the desire to be hurt which relate to how people of the African Diaspora often struggle for visibility and broader society. The interactions between the characters revealed the impact of race class and access the opportunities topics we often discussed in class as well.
I went with 3 of my other friends, it was swell to speak to each other and get different perspectives on the play. The actors were amazing as per usual and it was very engaging. Overall, I had a Great time.
