Attending Performances (theater, musical, concerts, opera, dance) (2-3 points)

In November, I attended the Spelman College production of the play, How We Got On. The play was put on by both Spelman and Morehouse College students. This play is about Julien, Hank, and Luann, three teens in a suburb of NYC who all have a specific talent for hiphop and navigate finding their identity as artists through family issues, social dilemmas, and jealousies. The way that this play was able to compile the complexities of inner city living and adolescence really peaked my interest. I love how they were able to incorporate crowd participation and tell the story through lighting and music.  In taking Acting for Non-Majors, this production definitely had me thinking about my personal performance skills. The main idea in my head was to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. I think there were probably moments in the process where these actors may have felt uncomfortable with best demonstrating their character but had to for the benefit of the story, so for myself as an actress, I would want to be comfortable in resembling characters that I may not see myself in, or doing things that may seem "funny" at first, but truly add to the story as well. Overall I took away a lot from this play!
