Attending a Performance: Hamilton: An American Musical(2 Points)-Jordan Benjamin
Over Fall Break, my family and I traveled to NYC to which we saw Hamilton: An American Musical.
This performance took place at Richard Rogers Theatre and was truly a performance like no other.
In honor of the show's tenth anniversary, the role of Aaron Burr, the main antagonist, was reprised by its original actor, Leslie Odom Jr.
Hamilton is focused on the life of Alexander Hamilton, a revolutionary, one of the founding fathers of the
United States, and the founder of the first central U.S. Bank. Hamilton is additionally an immigrant, which
reflects the impact that immigrants have had on this country throughout history. This production addresses
issues such as state vs. federal government, political divides, political violence, and enslavement. It also
addresses ideas such as leaving a legacy and ambition that comes with climbing to success. This is related to
my coursework with African Diaspora and the World, with the discussion of enslavement and the use of
enslaved labor to grow the riches of enslavers. The show also features a majority of POC(Person of Color)
cast which is a direct contrast from those the story is being told of. Along with these details, the cast
features an amazing soundtrack, powerful dancing and singing, and touching acting. I highly recommend
this for anyone who has the opportunity to see it.
