Attending director talks/movie screening (2-3 points) - Olivia Liddie

I was delighted to attend the Social Justice Programs screening and director talk-back for the award-winning documentary film "Daughters." I knew of the movie and the emotional impact that it had on my peers but had not previously had the opportunity to watch the film. Therefore when I learned not only could I see the movie but also hear from the director, I knew there was no better time.

The movie touched me in ways I did not know where possible. It was not only a beautiful description of what it means to be a daughter, but showed the complexities that exists in any strained father daughter relationship.Watching the girls mature and change with age, let us peak into their lives. Many of these girls hardened or became angry, as the absence of their fathers became more obvious to them over time. Some dads missed every important moment in a young girls life from graduations, to birthday parties, to family dinner. Other times the narrative focuses on the 'woman on the outside.' This fresh perspective which stripped the criminal title and only pinpointed father and daughter was profound.

Below I have included myself at the screening, an image of the director speaking to us and a image of one of my favorite moments of the film, when the daughters arrive in the prison for the father daughter dance. Their postures of the fathers and daughters are so recognizable that they make you reflect on your own experience with your dad. The reflective nature of this moment is sure to produce a tear or two!
