Attending author talks/book readings: 2-3 points - Niya Neblett

I attended an author talk by Robert Livingston. He discussed his new novel, “Play the Game, Change the Game, Leave the Game: Pathways to Black Empowerment, Prosperity, and Joy”.  The book explores pathways to Black empowerment, prosperity, and joy within systems that were not originally designed for Black success. During the talk, Livingston examined how individuals can strategically navigate existing structures (“play the game”), work to transform unjust systems (“change the game”), and ultimately create or pursue spaces that are more affirming and equitable (“leave the game”). His thoughts expanded my thinking by encouraging a more nuanced understanding of power and agency, particularly in professional and academic environments. On a personal level, the discussion prompted me to reflect on how I currently navigate institutions as a Black woman and how intentional decision-making can serve both self-preservation and long-term impact. I learned that success does not have to look linear or singular, and that adaptability and awareness are critical tools. Moving forward, I can apply these insights by being more strategic in how I engage with systems in technology and academia.
