Attending author talks: Q & A session with the Dr. Charis Chambers (The Period Doctor) 2 points Co’ 29
This past September, I attended a Q&A and informational talk with Dr. Charis Chambers, known as “The Period Doctor,” and it was one of the most inspiring events of my first semester at Spelman. Going into the session, I expected to learn more about menstrual health, but I left feeling motivated and empowered by her story and perspective on women’s reproductive health.
Dr. Chambers spoke honestly about her journey into medicine and the importance of advocating for women, especially in communities where reproductive health is often misunderstood or overlooked. Her passion and confidence made a healthcare career feel more attainable and purposeful. She emphasized the need for culturally competent care and open conversations around topics that are often considered uncomfortable.
The talk connected closely with what we were learning in my Introduction to Health Science class, helping me see how classroom concepts apply to real-life healthcare issues. Topics such as menstrual equity, reproductive justice, and patient education became more meaningful through her personal experiences.
Overall, the event was both enlightening and affirming. Hearing Dr. Chambers speak reinforced my interest in health science and reminded me how impactful representation and advocacy can be in medicine. It remains a highlight of my first semester and an experience that continues to shape my perspective on my future in healthcare.
