Advanced Coding Collective Social Media Chair - Leadership in an Academic Organization (Silver 5 points) - Class of 2028
Leadership in an Academic Organization (Silver 5 points)
I began serving as social media chair of the AUC Advanced Coding Collective in June 2025. This was the first time I served on an executive board as part of a team. Though I'm experienced in graphic design and social media management, I had always done it independently. I often struggle with group work, and in a field that's very creative and critical to drive club engagement, I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to mesh well with the group. After our first E-board meeting, I met with my committee individually and got to know the women I would be working with. They were warm, inviting, and showed clear enthusiasm for helpign promote ACC. Our first project was designing the E-board announcements. One member created the initial design, and as a group we continued tweaking the design until we had a unique design we could all be proud of.
Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of relying on my team. During times in my life that were more busy and an ACC event was coming up, I would become anxious, thinking I should be the one to create every flyer, and would volunteer to do so. I learned, however, that when I'm on a team, I don't have to do everything alone. One quick text to ask another committee member to do the flyer lifted a huge weight off of my shoulders, and allowed everyone to have a chance to contribute.
Being a social media chair for ACC also allowed me to hone my photography skills. I've photographed every club event I attended, including our AUC-wide coding competition, which I also participated in as part of Spelman's programming team. Doing photography for ACC also showed me that I find joy in photographing subjects and events I'm passionate about, like computer science. I felt not only accomplished for capturing beautiful moments between teams and AUC students, but also fulfilled by turning a worthy cause into art.
