President's Book Club (CO'2027)

I was able to participate in the President's Book Club with President Brewer in conjunction with SGA. During book club, we read "Finding Me" by Viola Davis, a powerful, authentic, heartbreaking memoir. I was so excited when the opportunity to apply came about because when I toured Spelman in high school, my tour guides described the president's book club, an exciting forum I wanted to participate in when I came to school. I had been waiting for its reemergence, so I was ecstatic when the opportunity arose. I was not entirely familiar with Viola Davis's upbringing before reading the memoir, but each pays she perfectly depicted her traumatic childhood that haunted her into adulthood. I did not have an extremely traumatic childhood, however, I loved watching how she rationalizes the things that shaped her behavior and thoughts in adulthood. I can identify how the patterns from my childhood influence how I address tough situations, conflict, and suppress my feelings. She also talked about the time she identified her passion of acting, seeing Cecily Tyson on screen for the first time and immediately knowing she would become an actress after that encounter. I look forward to having a moment like that where I wholeheartedly and undoubtedly find my passion, I am still waiting. This experience helped me with my critical thinking skills and reading comprehension, as well as connection of literature to real-life situations. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience of the book club.
