Morgan Harvey (Class of 2029)- Volunteering With BYEN House Meals on Wheels (2-4 points Volunteer work related to career goals)

From November 14th to 16th, 2025, and from November 20th to 23rd, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Morehouse RHA and BYEN House, to help with “Meals on Wheels,” an event that involved packaging plates, care packages, affirmations, and clothing for individuals experiencing homelessness in Atlanta. As we put together plates and bags, I realized how truly meaningful this work is. What began as a simple act of volunteering turned into a transformative experience that persuaded me to return for their second event.

Meals on Wheels was more than community service; it was a community coming together. As someone who aspires to work in government and policy, this experience brought me face-to-face with the real-world outcomes of public policy. I saw how access to food security can affect people's daily lives. It made the idea of being a public servant feel personal because these people's quality of life depends on the decisions made in the government today, something I hope to be a part of one day.

Volunteering helps ground me and realize that being at Spelman is about giving back to my community, but also giving back to the community around me. Working with my peers, making new connections, and having a good time while knowing we were doing something for the good of the community, reinforced my commitment to work hard to make a difference. It also expanded my understanding of how social issues, such as aging, access to healthcare, and food insecurity, connect to broader systems, providing me with a more holistic perspective that I can bring back to my classes.

Ultimately, my Meals on Wheels experience reminded me of the importance of service and why it is essential to invest in communities. I was able to spend my days/afternoons making a small difference in people's lives, and that in itself is an accomplishment.

Best, Morgan Harvey CO'29
