For my brain and behavior course, we were required to take part in an extensive research paper as a part of our final. I was given the topic of blindness. The paper explores the neurological and behavioral foundations of blindness, highlighting key findings from recent research, emerging therapeutic innovations, and insights from a man in the process of losing his sight. To complete the paper, we were required to interview people that we knew with the condition and then check how the results interacted with previous studies done surrounding the topic. Ultimately, I found that while there is a robust precedent of therapy, and increased accessibility, and medical innovations, it is more often than not only attainable by those with wealth, status, and prime geographic location. More studies and research need to be done into the ways that blindness impacts those of a lower socio-economic stratum or in second and third world countries. If I were to redo this paper, I would try to interview more people from different backgrounds. I feel as though the same inherent bias that affected previous studies has somewhat also affected my own paper.
