How We Got On-Job Shadowing +4
During my first year at Spelman College, I was still uncertain about my future career aspirations. I knew I wanted to live in the world of theatre and live performance in any capacity, but I didn’t want to be stuck with only one option. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I started to study the technical aspects of theatre. I explored the different types of stages, materials, and technology that bring a show to life. This semester, I had the pleasure of serving as the lighting associate for How We Got On by Idris Goodwin. This new experience was exhilarating, and I was so grateful to learn about the work that goes into producing a play. I found joy in troubleshooting equipment, solving unexpected issues, and contributing to a smooth rehearsal process. Under the guidance of the lighting director, I was able to observe, ask questions, and gain hands-on experience, which helped me grow as a multitalented artist. I also learned more about other positions such as Stage manager and sound designer. I assisted with focusing lights, ran the light board, and built a cue sheet document. I worked under Rachael Blackwell, a lighting designer here in Atlanta. She received her Bachelor of art in Theater Arts with a focus in technical theater from Alabama State University. She later received her MFA in Lighting Design & Technology in 2020 from CCM- University of Cincinnati. By Jordyn O'Neal
