Ca'Miyah King '27 - Studying Abroad 8pts & Traveling to Culturally Significant Locations 6pts
Studying abroad in Barcelona through the IES Political Science program is a transformative academic experience that has expanded my understanding of global governance, comparative politics, and cultural identity. Immersing myself in a city shaped by complex political history, regional autonomy movements, and civic engagement allowed me to examine political systems beyond a U.S.-centered framework. Learning in Barcelona provided direct exposure to how historical memory, social movements, and public institutions influence contemporary political discourse and democratic participation.
Beyond the classroom, navigating daily life in Barcelona deepened my cultural awareness and intellectual curiosity. Engaging with local communities, observing public life, and adapting to a new social and linguistic environment strengthened my ability to think critically, communicate across differences, and reflect on my own positionality as a Black American woman abroad. This experience reinforced the importance of global perspectives in understanding justice, equity, and policy-making. Studying abroad has not only enhanced my academic development but has also clarified my long-term goals in law and public service by emphasizing the value of cross-cultural knowledge and international awareness in creating meaningful systemic change.
