Ca'Miyah King '27 - Obtaining a professional certification: 6 points
Obtaining the Navigating Race & Racism Abroad as a Spelman Student certificate was a meaningful component of my preparation for global study and intercultural engagement. This training created space for critical conversations about race, identity, and power within international contexts, particularly as a Black woman studying abroad. Through guided discussions, case studies, and reflective exercises, I examined how systems of racism and historical inequities operate differently across global societies while still shaping the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
The training challenged me to think intentionally about how I show up in unfamiliar cultural spaces and how my identity as a Spelman student informs both my responsibilities and opportunities while abroad. Earning this certificate strengthened my cultural awareness, ethical decision-making, and ability to navigate complex social dynamics with confidence and empathy. This experience will directly inform how I engage academically and personally during my time abroad, allowing me to approach international learning with a deeper sense of accountability, respect, and global consciousness.
