Attending performances (theater/musical) - The Wiz (2 pts.) -- Kai Washington (Class of 2028)

Watching The Wiz at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans with my family, I was struck by how a familiar story could be transformed through a new cultural lens. Elements like the African-inspired set design and the incorporation of funk and soul music made me realize how storytelling can convey identity, history, and empowerment. Experiencing this, especially knowing the original Broadway play debuted in 1975, helped me see the significance of reframing narratives that have traditionally excluded Black voices. Beyond appreciating the artistry, the experience encouraged me to approach all the materials I consume (books, plays, films) with curiosity about their cultural and historical contexts. It reminded me that there are often deeper lessons and insights to uncover when we look beyond the surface, a perspective I hope to carry into both my academic and creative pursuits.
