Attending documentary film screening (2 Points) - Lydia Scott
I recently had the opportunity to attend a Daughters screening & Q&A session with the co-director Angela Patton, organized by one of my professors, Professor Levert. It was my first time ever watching the documentary, but it was beyond over due. If you know any Documentary Filmmaking major, the chances are high that they'll start singing praises whenever this documentary is brought up, and during the screening it became incredibly apparent as to why. Daughters is an incredibly moving, intentional, and tender documentary regarding young black girls and the relationships they have with their incarcerated fathers.
After the screening, I was able to ask the director a question regarding her approach to extracting raw, vulnerable, and authentic interviews from her subjects, as that was something that stood out to me. She emphasized the importance of making your subjects feel safe and comfortable, as well as the importance of establishing boundaries early on. I'm always looking for ways to better my craft, so it was enlightening to hear her answer and approach.
Afterward, some other members of SFF and I even got to take a photo with her, which was wonderful.
