Volunteer work related to career goals (3 points) - Samiah Lewis

I volunteered at the Juanita Wallace Day service event. This is a community event for local nonprofits that are dedicated to environmental restoration and community engagement. The event brought together volunteers of all ages to support sustainability efforts, strengthen community, and promote hands-on service learning.
My role was a mix of environmental work, logistical support, and community interaction. I started by helping nonprofit organizations set up their tents, ensuring that each group had the materials and space they needed to engage effectively with attendees. This coordination required teamwork, communication, and attention to detail with other volunteers as we worked to create a welcoming and organized space.
After setup, I joined a volunteer team focused on restoring the bioswale, a natural drainage area that manages stormwater runoff and improves local water quality. I assisted with cutting down overgrown ferns to maintain plant health, which supported its ecological function. I gained hands-on experience in urban environmental maintenance and learned how small restoration projects play a big role in city sustainability. Especially because we were in a predominantly Black community. I helped ensure the space was livable and contributed to diminishing environmental challenges that are unique to Black, underserved neighborhoods such as flooding and water quality.
Throughout the day, I also engaged with community members and guest volunteers, offering assistance whenever needed. I made an intentional effort to connect with people of all ages to emphasize that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility that thrives on collective action.
One of the most memorable moments of the day was playing games with a younger volunteer alongside elder community members. This lighthearted interaction reflected the celebration of Juanita Wallace and the purpose of her event: to bring people together through service, joy, and nature.
Overall, my experience at the Juanita Wallace Day service event deepened my understanding of environmental service as a practical and relational act. It reminded me that meaningful impact starts with small, consistent efforts like showing up, lending a hand, and fostering community rooted in care and environmental justice.
