Volunteer work related to career goals (3 points) — Parker Buchanan C/O ‘27

On September 11th, I met with a student through the Economics Department’s Student Success Mentor program, where I serve as a mentor to help economics majors and minors navigate both academic and non-academic areas of college life. During this one-on-one Zoom session, the student wanted advice on how to get involved in registered student organizations (RSOs) on campus. We talked about how to find organizations that align with her interests, ways to manage time effectively, and how getting involved can help build connections and leadership skills. I really enjoyed the conversation because it reminded me of when I was new to Spelman and looking for my own sense of community. It was rewarding to use my experiences to guide someone else and help her feel more confident about getting involved. I also realized how much I enjoy mentoring and supporting other students as they figure out their paths. This experience connects to my career interests because as another Economics major I’m heavily interested in finance and one of the biggest areas she wanted to get more invested in was the area of finance, so I recommended she get involved with Alt Finance.
