USC Medical School Camp/ Internship ( 5 points ) - Sanai Adams
USC Medical School Camp/Internship-
Over a month over the summer, I had the privilege of participating in an immersive camp/ internship at the USC School of Medicine in Greenville. This experience offered a unique blend of hands-on clinical training and invaluable insights into the medical profession, providing a deeper understanding of both the technical and human aspects of healthcare. Under close supervision, we practiced essential clinical skills such as suturing, intubation, drawing blood, and using ultrasound technology, each on realistic mannequins designed to simulate patient scenarios. These exercises challenged me to develop precision, patience, and empathy, revealing the complexity behind procedures that often seem routine. The hands-on practice also reinforced the importance of patient safety and comfort, key elements in effective care. In addition to clinical skills, we toured the medical school and engaged in conversations with physicians and internship directors. These discussions offered candid perspectives on the challenges and rewards of a medical career, emphasizing qualities like resilience, adaptability, and compassionate communication. The internship also included workshops on resume building and lunch sessions focused on the medical school application process. Hearing from admissions officers and current students provided practical guidance and underscored the importance of cultivating not only academic excellence but also diverse experiences and interpersonal skills. A particularly enlightening aspect was learning about various healthcare professions beyond medicine, including surgery, radiology, and pediatrics. This broadened my appreciation for the collaborative nature of healthcare and the many paths that contribute to patient well-being. In the end of this program we had a closing ceremony where we were rewarded with certificates and different medical equipment such as stethoscopes.
Reflecting on the experience, I recognize that this internship was more than an introduction to medical techniques, it was an initiation into the mindset and responsibilities of a healthcare provider. It deepened my commitment to pursuing medicine, equipped me with practical skills, and clarified the path ahead. I’m grateful for the mentorship and the inspiring environment that has motivated me to continue striving toward my goals.
