The Culture of Dancing: Hispanic Heritage Month

I heard music while walking to my ADW class and decided to follow the music.  I showed up at Manley Patio not really knowing what to expect, but the moment I arrived, I could feel an energy radiating through the whole place.  The band was already playing, and honestly, it was impossible not to get caught up in it.  The singing, the drums, everything just felt alive.  There was a moment when I realized everyone around me was feeling the same way, and it was lovely to be part of that.  The two dancers teaching us were absolute sweehearts about it.  They showed us the steps repeatedly, and we followed them.  They kept smiling and encouraging us.  I was laughing at myself trying to move my feet in ways they clearly weren’t meant to move, but nobody cared.  Everyone was just there to have fun and learn, and honestly, that’s what made it special.  The dancers were genuinely inviting us into their world, sharing something that clearly means a lot to them.  Walking out of there, I felt different.  I couldn’t stop smiling.  Events like this matter more than I think we realize.  In a world where everything feels so divided, there’s something extraordinary about just showing up, doing something totally outside your comfort zone, and connecting with people over music and movement.  I’m probably never going to be a salsa dancer, but I’ll definitely be back for more nights like this.
